The song "This Woman's Work" by Kate Bush is used masterfully in She's Having A Baby.
Kevin Bacon's character is a first time dad just about to enter his wife's labor and delivery room when all hell breaks looks. The nurses rush him out and he's sent to the waiting area while they perform a high risk delivery. The viewer gets a montage of images of their life, their early marriage, and their new parent preparations while the song pulls on your heart strings. It's a scene that always stuck with me, especially during my own wife's traumatic first labor and delivery.
In Return to Me, "Angel Standing By" is finishing as Bob comes home from the hospital with his wife's blood still on his shirt, and the dog is waiting for her to walk in and he says she's not coming back. 😭
Great choice. I was going to go with "Return to Me" too, but for the way the title song starts lightheartedly as a singer and a band and a couple dancing adorably; then hangs around in the background as we abruptly cut to a rush down a hospital hallway, like it's as confused as we are about what happened; then ends starkly with voice only, singing in Italian, as Bob stands wondering if his wife will ever return to him. (Maybe the cut makes it two scenes, though.)
Is it me or has this movie been suggested for some of the questions? I still haven't seen it, but looks like the movie has made an impression on some :)
I had a very difficult time with this one... so many choices!
I decided to go with the final scene in Gladiator.
As Maximus lay dying in the arena, a haunting melody begins to play. The music swells and grows louder as he transitions from life to death at which point the score is accompanied by a woman’s angelic-like voice singing in Latin (I think) as next we see Maximus walking through heavenly wheat fields towards his wife and child off in the distance joyfully waiting to receive him. The quality of the music is ethereal and glorious, but also slightly mournful and without it the scene wouldn’t be half as beautiful or impactful. Every time I watch it, my eyes are as dry as the Sahara desert right up until the moment the music begins and then I’m Niagara Falls 😭
In the linked scene the music dies down completely for a minute while Djimon Hounsou delivers his final lines and then swells again with more singing as the camera zooms out to capture the sun setting over Rome as a symbolic final goodbye to Maximus Decimus Meridius. Truly one of my favorite movies. 🤍
There are more worthy songs perhaps, but my brain is fried! I am going to suggest If You Leave by Orchestral Manoeuvres In the Dark that played in the closing act of Pretty In Pink.
And the winner is Shannon with Return To Me. Congratulations, Shannon, you get to choose Monday's question.

Yep, that’s such a great segment too. 🤍
