I'm not exactly a fan but I'll go with Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Mandalorian, Hunt for the Wilderpeople). He has this annoying habit of placing himself in his own movies. He was the worst part of Free Guy, but it was a pretty fun movie.

I came here to say this but you beat me to it. My only disagreement is that I like him for his particular quirkiness. And he was my favorite part of Free Guy. I always watch for his cameo in whatever he is directing. His cameo sermon in Hunt for the Wilderpeople is often quoted in my house.

But Corg was one of the best parts of Ragnarok.

We didn't finish Wilderpeople. I think we got around 40 minutes in before we decided to watch something else. 😄

I'm a fan of Wilderpeople. When my wife and I were traveling to every state, it was the movie we watched in a quaint little theater in Mystic, Connecticut. Love Sam Neil in that film.

Still got lots of options out there - Pixar directors Brad Bird or Pete Docter, Lord and Miller, Shawn Levy etc...

Amazingly, 80-year-old Werner Herzog is still working (Fordlandia is in preproduction.) Just as a person, Herzog might qualify as the quirkiest director, a very strange man (as one can see by watching the documentary short, "Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe.") He has worked on features (from Fitzcarraldo about a man transporting an opera house on the Amazon to Even Dwarves Started Small about a midget rebellion in a correctional facility.) He has also made documentaries (from Grizzly Man about an idiot nature boy to Cave of Forgotten Dreams about ancient drawings in a French gave.)

He has made some genuienly great films and some very strange films. And he's a decent actor.

Imagine that. Eustace in the lead.

There are tons of quirky directors, most of which I enjoy or tolerate. But my favorite would have to be Wes Anderson. Final answer.

Naah, it's too easy. David Lynch. Final answer.

Lynch's last real feature was released 16 years ago. Not sure he qualifies as a current movie directory.

Ian Samuels, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things. One of the best (and quirkiest) movies we’ve seen this year.

Good pick. I really liked this movie too, but I forgot about it, which begs the question - was it good enough to be memorable and if it wasn’t memorable is it good enough to win “top answer”?😂👊🏻😉🤍

Ha, good question! 😂

I may have to disqualify myself because you said “making content today”. Try as I might, I can’t list a single director with a current body of work that I find worth arguing for. When I think of a worthy example of quirky genius, I keep coming back to Napoleon Dynamite - written and directed by Jared Hess… but I think that would fall way outside the definition of “current content”. Still, that would remain my best and final answer. 😄

Clint Eastwood. Final Answer.

Gran Torino, Million Dollar Baby, Unforgiven.

That's bold, in a way.

Love all those movies and admire Eastwood’s style, but not sure if they can qualify as “quirky”. 🤔 I call “party foul” on account these are all dramas 😂 Ref?

English Bob was a little quirky.

Looks like we've got a tie in our first fight. The rules say the tiebreaker is chosen by the member who posted the question, but since I haven't heard from Arahant I'll concede to Eustace C. Scrubb. He'll get to choose tomorrow's question.

See you tomorrow, everyone.

I found my way over but don't follow new stuff enough to have an answer.

Blame Arahant.

Always do.

I am always just a lurker looking for movies that I hadn't seen that sound good.

I will lurk and maybe pick on peoples' ideas about quirky.
